The snow is finally all melted, leaving us with brown. Brown grass, brown leaves, brown dirt. Like Sherle of PhotoTime Tuesday I am longing for color to break the unremitting bleakness of the days. So stroll with me through my little patch of Kansas as I remember 2003 as Summer drifted into Autumn...

Funeral for a friend

This bark had such character
It peeled like sheets of paper
The canopy in better days

We are gathered here today to mourn the passing of a friend. The Clump River Birch is gone. The tree killers came and dropped it to the ground. It's lacy, delicate leaves to whisper the wind no more. The bugs that took refuge in it's bark will no longer feed the persistent bird who was willing to work for a juicy morsel. The carcass is left for me to dispose of, as requested. You don't send an old friend off to some anonymous wood-chip pile. Next winter a viking funeral will be held in the wood stove on the main level. The tree will be honored this Spring with the planting of like saplings, in places where my house cannot interfere with their beauty.

Desktop wallpaper

A beautiful island
The view of my house from a satellite in outer space
Margo Timmins with the voice like silk
What's on my desktop? ( Well for one thing, it's very cluttered, just like my 'real' desktop. I try to change wallpaper as frequently as possible. Not that I ever get to see it with so many programs open all the time. I also use wallpaper as a message board to other 'people' who use my computer on occasion. 'They' don't always like the little wallpapers that are directed at them, but that's too bad.

It's very hard to take pictures from a car, especially when you are the only one in the car and you have to drive at the same time. At least with digital, you aren't wasting any film on the shots that just don't turn out. Here are shots I took when I was driving from my mom's house in California to Las Vegas, NV to catch the plane back home to Kansas.

My new ring

Alexandrite with diamonds
My friend is visiting from Florida. She knows I am a jewelry hound. She makes jewelry and this is what she brought as her 'hostess gift' on this trip. I just love it. It's Alexandrite with some diamonds.
